12:00pm Inside-Out: Healing with a Sustainable Diet with Chelsea Greene

Did you know the single thing any person can do to make the most impact on the environment is what they choose to eat? This workshop will describe the current studies on emissions, water use, land use, impact on oceans, wildlife, humanity, and waste of animal agriculture. Then you’ll learn ways of eating a plant based diet while consuming enough protein for even the most active person, and then, how to compost in your kitchen with vermicomposting! Let’s evolve together for a better world.
Join us in this workshop about sustainable dieting, the importance of a plant based diet, have a discussion about evolving as a more herbivorous species, and how to make a worm compost in your home.

Chelsea Greene is a graduate student at American University earning a degree in environmental filmmaking. I’ve always been an environmentalist; I grew up in the forest of Vermont with a close relationship with nature. After returning from Africa summer 2016 where I interned on a Nat Geo WILD TV show called safariLIVE I was inspired to work harder to make a difference. The animals where I was filming were seeing the effects of climate change but we weren’t able to talk about it on the show because that’s not good entertainment. So I began to teach this workshop to educate people on the immense impact of animal agriculture to make informed choices in their daily routine that really make a difference.

3:00 Psychedelic Harm Reduction with Sara Gael

The Zendo Project provides a supportive environment and specialized care designed to transform difficult psychedelic experiences into valuable learning opportunities, and even potentially offer healing and growth. In turn, our work reduces the number of drug-related hospitalizations and arrests. This year, millions of people will use psychedelics outside of supervised medical contexts, many of them for the first time. Difficult psychedelic experiences can be frightening, but also potentially among the most valuable experiences someone can have. What can you do to help someone having a difficult psychedelic experience? What techniques are available for helping transform a potentially traumatic situation into a positive or even therapeutic one? What role has the Zendo Project played at festivals, and what take-home messages are available for others interested in psychedelic harm reduction?

Sara Gael, MA-Director of Harm Reduction, MAPS Zendo Project, received her Master’s degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology at Naropa University. She began working with MAPS in 2012, coordinating psychedelic harm reduction services at festivals and events worldwide with the Zendo Project. Sara was an Intern Therapist for the recently completed MAPS Phase 2 clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD in Boulder, CO. She maintains a private practice as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and non-ordinary states of consciousness. Sara believes that developing a comprehensive understanding of psychedelic medicines through research and education is essential for the health and well being of individuals, communities, and the planet.

5:30 Trauma Integration Circle with Kara & Cici

The workshop is a safe space for people to come and discuss trauma. We are all empowered beings who have the capacity to heal ourselves. Through trauma work every individual is capable of reaching a state of fulfillment and happiness. In this trauma circle we will discuss the impacts of trauma, how it affects people on a personal level, give an overview trauma responses, and look at ways the body can reduce symptoms and even heal. During a mindfulness exercise we will tap into trauma and learn ways to calm the nervous system. Most mental health diagnoses such as bipolar, schizophrenia, addiction, and even ADHD can be traced back to trauma. It’s important to understand trauma to promote healing and wellness.

Kara is an LCSW who resides in Asheville, North Carolina with my daughter. She has studied trauma in depth throughout the course of my career and have worked in a variety of settings with trauma patients which include hospitals with hospice patients and in schools with low income and disadvantaged children who have been physically, emotionally and sexually abused. Currently, she works in the emergency room at Mission Hospital with trauma patients and am beginning a private practice. On a daily basis, she sees the impact of trauma and how essential awareness and education is for healing. Her travels to Peru to work with shamans taught her that everything is interrelated and that trauma remains in the body long after the event has passed. To heal fully we cannot only address the mind. We must incorporate a holistic approach to address the mind, body, and spirit. As a reiki master she uses energy work in her personal and professional life.
